What is the TR19 Report?
HVCA, the Heating & Ventilation Contractors Association was renamed and is now known as BESA (ie. Building Engineering Services Association).
The TR19 - Guide to Good Practice – Internal Cleanliness of Ventilation Systems was introduced by the BESA to provide specification for the cleaning of kitchen extraction systems, including canopies, ducts and vents. The TR19 guide outlines the requirements of both the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) as well as insurance company guidance regulations.
The TR19 Guide details specific considerations for the cleaning of Kitchen Extract Systems and outlines requirements for the maintenance of each section of the ventilation equipment, i.e. the canopy, canopy prenum, extract fan and discharge duct. The latest edition incorporates reference to the new British and European Standards BS introduced in 2011, and highlights best practice for ensuring that kitchen extract systems are maintained to minimise the risk of fire associated with grease accumulation, (a subject not covered by BS EN 15780).
It’s incredibly important to follow the specifications stipulated in the TR19 guide so as to keep the extraction system clean, minimise the risk of fire within the system and meet insurance requirements.
