The ‘Old Wives’ Guide to Cleaning your Kitchen
Top 5 ‘Old Wives’ Cleaning tips that Actually Work
As experts in kitchen cleaning we use only the best cleaning products available to bring your kitchen up to the highest standard.
However we thought it would be useful to put together our top 5 ‘old wives’ tales that actually work to maintain a clean kitchen.
1. Microwaving Sponges Kills Germs
Limit the spread of bacteria by microwaving your kitchen sponges. Old wives tale number one suggests zapping your sponges in a dish of water with a little lemon juice to reduce the spread of germs when wiping down work areas.
2. Clean Windows using Old Newspapers
Clean your windows using old newspapers. The second of our old wives’ tale claims to work due to the density of the fibre in the newspapers, much denser than paper towels, so they will absorb liquid but they won’t fall apart as easily. Sounds like a winner to me.

3. Baking Soda Cleans your Oven
Water and Baking Soda to remove grease from oven glass, old wives’ tale number three recommends using a quarter cup of baking soda with just enough water to make a runny paste. Apply the paste for 20-30mins, depending on how bad it is, before scrubbing it off and voila your oven glass should be good as new.
4. Home Made Grout Cleaner
Old wives’ tale number four features baking powder once again, this time to make your own grout cleaner for those stubborn kitchen tiles. So you’re going to need ¾ cup baking soda and ¼ cup bleach, again mix the two until you have a thick paste then apply to the offending grout and let it get to work for 5-10mins. Now roll your sleeves up and give the paste a scrub, wait a further 5-10mins before rinsing and in a few hours you should have sparkling white grout once again.
5. Chalk Removes Grease
Ever come home from the kitchen and find a massive grease mark on your clothes? The fifth and final old wives’ tip is especially for you. Simply rub white chalk directly onto the grease or oil mark, the chalk will absorb the grease, then wash your clothes as normal. This should save you on all those expensive stain pre-treaters.
We don’t recommend using any of these tips in your commercial kitchen of course, but if you feel like doing that little extra around the house, put them to the test and let us know what results you get.
